The World’s Last Wonder is Australia’s first space opera science fiction story and was serialised in the Tocsin newspaper 1901/02/14-1901/05/16. I hope you enjoyed chapters I and II of The World’s Last Wonder last week. This week, Chapters III and IV explores the insides of the space car, a visit to Brooklyn, New York, and the addition of an American member to the crew, along with the sudden introduction of a love interest.

Ah, romance. It always creeps into space fiction when you least expect it.

The author is ‘Unattributed’ but it was possibly written by Bernard Patrick O’Dowd, perhaps with contributions by John Arthur Andrews and Evangeline Mina Fryer.

I should point out that this story is not complete on Trove. I sourced chapter IV from physical records, with huge thanks to both the National Library of Australia archives and Melbourne University Library. As it hadn’t been OCR’d and the text on the page wasn’t entirely OCR’able’ I typed it out so that it could be read for this podcast. So, at the moment, Vintage SciFi Podcast 7 is the only place you can find a free online copy of Chapter IV for research purposes!

Enjoy! Thanks for listening.
